I think we need to improve in two areas: collaboration and communication. Sharing concepts with others seems somewhat scary – especially when two groups like marketing and sales come together! Of course not everyone will share the same passion for the same concepts; but our diversity can help introduce valuable new information that can lead to better ideas.
More involvement in the creative process leading up to the final execution would allow us to see the same idea from different perspectives. It may seem that a great result would stem from a team that agreed on every aspect of the idea. Conversely, I think the best way to achieve great results when collaborating is to think independently from the group.
Being different might work to our benefit, allowing our ideas to evolve rather than resulting in homogenous groupthink. So bring on the arguments and let the creativity begin!
Brittany, I agree with you completely there. It's not just between Marketing and Sales but even within Marketing alone. I've noticed that many companies we talk to have multiple marketing groups such as one for email, one for direct mail, and then another advertising agency. When they are all trying to establish corporate messaging but completely isolated from eachother, it makes the "collaboration and communication" a little difficult. One of the advantages of our software platform facilitates the standard corporate message across all mediums so that Sales is still allowed some input with Marketing control.
Wow, Angela has sales on the brain......yes, we know big companies face these challenges, and our software helps...or so we say. Lets say you PROVE it. Give a concrete example of what you say is true, rather than speaking in the general.
Lay out a story of what you see happening, right or wrong, and how alternative marketing helps that, how alternative processes help that, and what can be done, like a case study. General feel good comments are just not enough for our readers.
Or better yet. We invite the non marketing and sales teams to weigh in on our ideas and concepts. We may be surprised at what comes of it. We would get a full array of perception of what we produce. Any way, just some thought.
I think that's a great idea Doug - the more feedback we receive from different departments, the more we can appeal to a broader audience.
