A Truly Awful Idea

One of the great things about the new technologies being used for marketing is that they are often low-cost, allowing for a greater scope of creativity and testing. Good taste, however, remains in the purview of the marketer and is still, sadly, optional.

BL Ochman alerts us to an advertising scheme that has, at best, very dubious taste. Jeff Chen, recently graduated and unemployed, is renting "floors" of his "virtual World Trade Center" as advertising space. In his FAQ, he says:

Q: Who can rent a floor?
A: Anyone, individuals or businesses who love the Twin Towers. However, it’s especially good for your e-business.

About the only thing the least bit positive I can say about this is that the website’s owner is very honest about the site’s actual purpose.

Q: Where does the money go?
A: I need it badly for my living because I’m unemployed since I graduated from the university one year ago, and still have a lot of debts because of education to pay off.

There are some things that ought to be off-limits for marketing purposes for about a century. This is one of them.

Wow...this is in such poor taste, I have to move to the intentional comedy (Mel Brooks, etc) to find something so wretched.

"I am poor, I have bills, so I will use the death of strangers to ease my own suffering" .....lets hope we never sink so low.
