Tasty Tools for Web Development

Checking my "live bookmarks" in Firefox this morning, I found a gem from Joel: his favorite FireFox extensions.

I started using FireFox as my preferred browser about a year ago because the tabbed browsing and live bookmark features are quite useful for reducing open windows on my desktop and keeping the sites I want to visit frequently  in a convenient and accessible location. To the built-in features, I’ve added the RSS Ticker to turn my live bookmarks into a clickable scrolling marqee along the bottom of my browser. I had also been using IE Tab for a while so I could check the blog and the corporate web site pages without having to open another window.

Now, Joel introduces me to the Web Developer Extension with a plethora of tools making it easy to check your web pages in all kinds of interesting scenarios. I immediately ran some of the validation tools on this page. I’m now moderately embarrassed by the imperfection of the code on this page. (Ah, well. It is viewable so life’s not all bad. But it’s another thing to put on my list o’ things to work on.)

Since our product has a browser-based front end, I naturally immediately forwarded these to our engineering team.

I also forwarded the link to my partner in crime, Brittany, who does all the pretty bits on the corporate web site. She and I plan to get a lot of milage out of the Web Developer Extension.

Now, for those of you who have no interest in all the technical bits, my fave non-technical extension is FoxyTunes which lets you control your music from your browser. From the download page:

Supports WinAmp, iTunes, Yahoo Music Engine, Pandora, foobar2000, Windows Media Player, Xbox Media Center, Musicmatch, Quintessential, J. River, jetAudio, XMPlay, MediaMonkey, Media Player Classic, Sonique, wxMusik, Real Player, XMMS, Noatun, Juk, Amarok, Music Player Daemon, Rhythmbox and many other players.

Have fun!
