I’ve been working on getting us a tasty, easy to use web log analysis program. Searching on Google turned up a few candidates but none of the companies’ web sites really grabbed me and said "this is exactly what you wanted." I downloaded a few pieces of trial software and installed the two that looked most promising but neither was quite what I had hoped.
Today, in my RSS feed, I saw a link to an article about web analytics over at SearchEngine Guide and, although I was already sold on the premise of the article, that web analytics are good and necessary, I figured I would give it a gander.
And here’s where the marketing soared.
First, the author, Manoj Jasra, was kind enough to point his readers at some free analytics tools. There’s a good start.
Now, a brief stumble as I land on a page about ClickTracks’ paid software, forcing me to fumble and search about for the free version that I really wanted to try out first.
Then, ClickTracks does two beautiful things. They offer a free webinar to teach the users of their free product how to use it, ensuring that they don’t lose us due to cluelessness. And they admit, right in their FAQ, that they are going to do their best to entice us to buy a commercial version by teasing us with "here today/gone tomorrow" advanced features.
Now there is a great way to get me hooked. I guess "the first one is free" still works.
Thanks for the mention
I think that with companies such as Google and ClickTracks offering such good services with their free products the big guns (HBX,SiteCatalyst,WebTrends) will have to start offering a little more.
