Did the meaning of “Mac” change while I wasn’t looking?

I have McDonald’s game pieces for the Pirates of the Caribbean game so I went to the website to see if I won anything (naturally, I didn’t). There are banners and links all over asking "Are you Mac enough?" In my mind, "Mac" is still synonymous with "Apple" so I was surprised when the consolation music download says that it’s not compatible with the iPod. I had been thinking that this was a weak co-marketing effort and was only jolted out of this thought when I saw the "nope, we aren’t playing together" clue. In retrospect, I should have known it wasn’t a co-marketing effort; Apple would have been a lot more prominent if it had been.

Chalk "Mac" up as a very successful and strong Apple brand play. It took the equivalent of a slap to the face to break the automatic association that "Mac" has for me.

And I’m not going to bother to download the song because I only listen to music on my iPod.

But what was the McDonald’s thinking on this one? I can see the association from "mac donald" to "are you man enough" and making that substitution but are they planning to try to take over that branding now that Apple has moved into the "i" branding? Seems like an uphill battle to me.

Could you really forget the Big Mac jingle?

"Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun."

You're right, though; Mac by itself connotes Apple instantaneously in my mind.

Nope. Can't forget that one. McD's has its own strong branding going on there.
