Punctuation and the Marketer

I don’t know how it happened but somehow, back in my formative years, I became hyper-aware of punctuation and sentence structure. I still break the rules - don’t get me wrong - but I also wince when I see a misplaced apostrophe or a sentence fragment where it doesn’t belong. (Commas get a lot more leeway from me, though, because there are many and conflicting rules for their usage.)

I had always thought that I was somehow unique. But then I was given Lynn Truss’ book "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" and discovered that I wasn’t all that much of a freak.

And now Seth further reaffirms my faith with a post about the apostrophe.

I have always found it incredible when journalists and marketers, people whose job it is to communicate, can’t properly use grammar. It’s like someone in IT not knowing how to use Google or Yahoo; the job can be accomplished but not nearly as elegantly. And, in marketing, style counts.

Get your copy looked at. Elaine Fogel at MarketingProfs has taken a moment to acknowledge the folks who do this for a living.

And it will keep knee-jerk reactionaries like me from thinking, "that’s just sloppy."

(Does anyone else scratch their head in puzzlement over "Supercut’s"? I mean, is that supposed to be a possessive?)
